About The Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are made up of Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

Majorca (Mallorca) - Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, flying time most most UK airports is around 2 - 2 ½ hours and on arrival local time is 1 hour in ahead of GMT. There are many different activities you can do on Majorca and plenty of different attractions for you to visit.

Mallorca / Majorca tourism first took off around the 1950s, for many years after Mallorca was thought of as a 'cheap package tourist destination'. Since this time Majorca has cleaned up its image to provide tourists with whatever holiday they are looking for the island.

Balearic Islands

Majorca offers plenty of beautiful scenery with many villages, mountains and hidden bays rarely discovered by tourists. The capital of Mallorca is Palma which is only a few minutes from the airport. Palma being the capital has a beautiful historic centre which is over looked by a Gothic cathedral.

Majorca's most popular tourist resorts is around the bay of Palma, these are, S'Arenal, Magaluf and Palma Nova. The more northern part of the Majorca offers more up market / exclusive options for tourist, Puerta Pollensa for example is a very popular tourist destination for villa holidays.

Majorca is not really a all year round resorts, it suffers from a hot summer and a more mild winter (although warmer than the United Kingdom).

Minorca (Menorca) - is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. Although the second largest Menorca has been able to keep a lot of the traditional settings and managed to avoid over development.

Minorca / Menorca is probably best know for its relaxing golden beach holidays along its various rugged coastline, rocky coves and inlets. The capital of Minorca is Mahon and is also the location of the island's airport.

Mahon boasts one of Europe's largest and natural harbours. It has an attractive mixture of colonial and local architecture which is built on a hill overlooking the port. There is a large and good selection of shops, bars and restaurants in all the resorts. Although this Island is the second largest Minorca is only 9 miles ( or 15km) wide and around 32 miles (or 52km) long.

The Island has been left almost unspoiled, this is due to the fact that the locals do not reply on tourism unlike many other of the Islands.

Aside from all the golden beaches and tourist resorts the Minorca also has plenty of history and culture, with many different attractions to experience. The most famous attraction is the world famous pipe organ and several archaeological sites which relate to the second millennium BC Talayot culture.

Ibiza - is the third largest Balearic Island and is best known as the "Party Island". Although Ibiza lives up to the reputation of all night parties there is also a lot more to this Island. Ibiza offers a lot of tourist attractions and many golden beaches so you can escape and just relax.

Ibiza is best known as the party capital of the world. Ibiza is a well known destination for the young at heart who want to stop out late and visit some of the most famous clubs in the world.

Ibiza is not just known for its parties and clubs though, large portions of Ibiza are registered as U.N. World Heritage Sites. There are many different companies and artists who frequently use the island for photographic and film shoots. Ibiza has over 50 stunning beaches and there are plenty of attractions, museums, events and festivals for everyone to enjoy.

During the 1990's tourism suddenly grew and Ibiza was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records as the 'entertainment island of the world'. Thousands of visitors fill most of the resorts on Ibiza and the nightclubs are legendary, but away from this there are other things to see and do which include olive, almond and fig groves, salt lakes, pine forests and many historic buildings.

Ibiza town is also one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe and is also the largest town on the island.

Formentera - is the fourth largest Balearic Island, this smaller Island offers some of the best and un-spoilt beaches the Balearic Islands has to offer.

Formentera is a very beautiful and unspoiled island within the Balearic Islands. Most of the beaches here attract nudists from all around Europe as well as other nature-lovers and young families seeking a relaxed holiday in a tranquil environment.

Although the option of clothes on the beaches is up to the tourists, you will still find a very happy and relaxed atmosphere here.

If you are traveling to Formentera the only way to get on the Island is by ferry from Ibiza. The ferry leaves around every 2 hours. At the port of Formentera, there are buses to La Sabina, San Francisco and La Mola. Because this Island can only be reached by ferry, it's allowed the Island to maintain the original spanish feel.

With little tourism on the Islands this is a great chance to explore the Islands and visit the old shops and villages.
