More About Kiel

Kiel is the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein and has a long shipbuilding and naval tradition. Today, it is characterised by its vibrant student scene, laid-back lifestyle and urban flair. This can be seen in its stunning setting on the Kiel Fjord, the modern and spacious city centre and Dänische Strasse, a street full of maritime charm at the heart of Kiel with many preserved buildings from the late 19th century.

The city owed its rapid – and rather chaotic – growth in the 19th century to its importance to shipbuilding and the navy.

After the widespread destruction of the Second World War, the plan was to create a contemporary city with a modern, open and spacious feel. Greater focus was placed on the location of the city centre and Kiel's connection with the water, and none of the historical buildings that had been destroyed were going to be rebuilt. However, over the past decade or so, the city centre has been systematically enhanced, and part of the old quarter is even being reconstructed by restoring the historical Eggerstedtstrasse and redesigning Alter Markt square.

Kiel Ferry Port

KIEL around 90km from Lübeck on the Baltic side is a gritty urban sprawl in this region of coast and cows. Over ninety raids in 1945 alone unleashed such devastation on what was Germany's principle submarine base that the port at the end of a deep firth had to start from scratch when the smoke cleared. Its lumpen concrete blocks built at speed in the 1950s are not the place to look for history – when brochures flag up the first pedestrian street in Germany (Holstenstrasse in 1525), you know tourist authorities are struggling.

Though lacking the looks of Lübeck – the more obvious candidate for capital – Kiel has instead the port which made it its fortune. It became the imperial war-port in 1871, and when the Kiel Canal (Nord-Ostsee-Kanal) opened to link the Baltic and North seas in 1895, Kiel controlled what was the biggest man-made waterway in the world. It remains the busiest, and shapes modern Kiel: workaday and resilient, with a knockabout, unpretentious air, especially during international sailing regatta Kieler Woche. Its few museums will pass a morning, but the self-styled "Kiel Sailing City" is at its best around water: seen from the Kiellinie footpath or on cruises on the Kieler Förde and canal.

Water is the dominant feature in this city by the sea, as can be seen by the expanding Baltic Sea port, the huge cranes in the shipyards, giant ferries docked at Scandinavia Quay and, of course, the Kiel Week regatta, which has earned Kiel its reputation as the world's sailing capital.

Places of interest in Kiel include the picturesque Friedrichsort cliffs, numerous beaches within the city limits, the promenade along the western shores of the firth, the locks on the Kiel Canal at Kiel-Holtenau, the naval port and quarter, the Botanical Gardens of the Christian Albrecht University, Holstenstrasse – one of the oldest pedestrian precincts in Germany – and the Hörn bridge with its ingenious folding mechanism. There are also many fascinating museums to visit, such as the Maritime Museum on Sartori Quay, the Computer Museum, the Kunsthalle art gallery with its collection of antiquities and the Engineering Museum. The varied arts scene includes Kiel Theatre, the Polish Theatre and the Philharmonic Orchestra. A popular event in summer is the acclaimed Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors. Kiel is also a great destination at other times, maybe because it is the best place to eat kieler sprotten – a local speciality made from sprats.

The name of Kiel appears as early as the 10th century in the form Kyl (probably from the Anglo-Saxon Kille = a safe place for ships). Kiel is mentioned as a city in the next century; in 1242 it received the Lubeck rights; in the 14th century it acquired various trading privileges, having in 1284 entered the Hanseatic League. In recent tinies Kiel has been associated with the peace concluded in January 1814 between Great Britain, Denmark and Sweden, by which Norway was ceded to Sweden. In 1773 Kiel became part of Denmark, and in 1866 it passed with the rest of Schleswig-Holstein to Prussia. Since being made a great naval arsenal, Kiel has rapidly developed in prosperity and population.
